Your Appointment

First visit

It is not unusual to be nervous about your first visit to an osteopath but we will do our best to put you at your ease. Please be sure to tell us about any questions or worries you have at any time.

On your first visit you will be asked to complete some forms with your contact details and some details about your past medical history and then to sign the bottom which authorises us to treat you. Don’t forget to bring your glasses if you need them!

During your consultation

You will be asked questions about your problem and how it started and if there is anything that makes it worse or better.

Please help us by bringing a list of any medications you are taking.

All the information you give is treated as strictly confidential and is not released by us to anyone else without your consent

The examination

Osteopaths are interested not only in the affected area but also in how this relates to the body as a whole. In order to help us in this assessment you will be asked to undress to your underclothes so please wear something you feel comfortable in. We do have gowns available on request.

An assessment will be made of your posture and the movements of the affected area. Some specialist tests such as testing your reflexes or taking your blood pressure may also be done at this stage.

By the end of your consultation we will know how best to help you and will explain to you both the problem as osteopaths see it and the way we can help. If we do not think osteopathy can help, this too will be explained and appropriate action or a referral to another practitioner may be given.

Contacting your doctor

If further medical treatment is needed, we may, with your permission, contact your doctor.

We do find that we are able to help most people that come to us, and in this case will discuss and agree with you an action plan for getting you better. It is important that you stick to this plan in order for you to get the best possible results from your treatment.

In most cases some treatment will be given on your first visit. Treatment is hands-on and will involve articulation and mobilisation of joints and stretching of muscles. Please remember that we are working together with you and that if you find any treatment technique uncomfortable or painful, please do not be afraid to tell your practitioner to stop. We are skilled practitioners and will find a different technique to help you.

Throughout your visit we will try to make you feel at ease and explain what is happening at each stage.

Reaction to treatment

Some discomfort or stiffness after the treatment is common but does not generally last long. Like any medical treatment more serious reactions are possible but very rare and osteopathy has an excellent safety record.

You are welcome to bring a friend or relation into the treatment room if you wish.

Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
