What to expect during your first appointment
It's not unusual to be nervous about visiting an osteopath but I will do my best to put you at ease. If you have any questions or worries please feel free to bring them up and I will do my best to answer them fully.
Questions
Before an osteopath can treat you they have to have a full picture of your problem. So you will be asked some questions about yourself.
Osteopaths need to know about your health, past and present and you will be asked detailed questions about your symptoms and how they have developed. Although some questions may seem unnecessary all this information is important and helps in making a diagnosis and a suitable treatment plan for you.
The examination
In order to do a full examination you will be asked to undress to your underwear so the practitioner sees not only the area which is causing problems, but also other areas which may be related to your condition. A gown is available if you are uncomfortable with this. You may be asked to perform certain movements and tests may be carried out (i.e. reflexes, blood pressure) in order to understand and assess your condition.
Discussion and explanation
Once I have a full picture of your problem I will explain and discuss this with you. If osteopathic treatment is appropriate then in most cases I can start right away. If I do not feel you will benefit from Osteopathy I will explain this to you and will try and recommend an appropriate course of action to help you.
I will always try to make you feel at ease and tell you what is happening throughout your consultation. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask, as I am here to help you. If further medical treatment is needed, I may need to contact your doctor, with your permission.
How can you help me?
- Please answer any questions in full.
- As you will be asked to undress please wear appropriate underwear so that you will feel comfortable.
- If you don't understand the explanation of your condition or the treatment please ask me to explain it more clearly.
- We are working together to help your problem so please do not hesitate to ask me to stop the treatment if at any point in time you feel uncomfortable or in discomfort.
- Remember you will be responsible for the payment of fees.
Risks
Any form of medical intervention carries risks. Fortunately Osteopathy is very safe and serious complications are very rare.
I always try to minimise any reactions to treatment however it is not unusual to get some aching and soreness after a treatment and this normal goes away quickly by itself. Occasionally the reaction is more painful or takes a little longer to settle but again normally goes by itself.
If you have any concerns, please contact the practice.
